A New Economic Era for China Goes Off the Rails
HONG KONG — When President Xi Jinping of China convened a group of top officials to discuss the economy last month, the highly publicized meeting was seen as a moment of triumph.
A stock market plunge last summer, and a messy currency devaluation that followed, had faded from global view. In the relative calm, he seemed to usher in a new era of economic management, promising policy coordination at the highest levels to prevent another bout of turmoil.
Less than three weeks later, his plans have been derailed as China’s stock market and currency once again rattle investors around the world. The latest rout sets up a challenge for Mr. Xi, who has positioned himself as the master of the country’s economy.
At every turn, the president’s efforts to manage the economy, market and currency have been undercut by global headwinds and haphazard policy making, and initiatives this week have been particularly discordant.
He also cannot move forward on the bolder actions needed to head off a more serious economic slump, such as forcing hopelessly indebted state-owned enterprises to stop borrowing money and shut down. Otherwise, he risks further eroding short-term confidence and growth, which have depended heavily on this borrow-and-spend mentality, and mass layoffs could follow.
Mr. Xi’s options are also more limited than in the past. He and his aides engineered the elevation of the renminbi to the ranks of the world’s leading currencies, a status bestowed by the International Monetary Fund in November. But in doing so, he gave up some control, allowing market forces to play a bigger role.
In the last couple of years, China had begun allowing, even encouraging, companies and people to invest more of their wealth overseas. Doing so helped reduce deflationary pressures at home from chronic overinvestment and overcapacity, and increased China’s influence around the world.
But a trickle of money leaving China to buy houses and other overseas investments has become a flood this winter. The central bank has responded by trying for the last three weeks to slowly guide the currency down as a way to help bolster exports and also make overseas investments seem more expensive and less appealing

A319 flew low over terrain as crew lost position awareness
- 10 DECEMBER, 2015
- BY: DAVID KAMINSKI-MORROW
- LONDON
Pilots of an EasyJet Airbus A319 overflew a ridge at less than 500ft after losing awareness of their position while attempting a visual night landing at Bristol earlier this year.
The aircraft was arriving from Glasgow and needed to perform a sharp right turn to line up with Bristol’s runway 27.
But the captain executed the turn prematurely and did not realise that the aircraft was north of the extended centreline and tracking an oblique course to the threshold.
As the jet descended through 1,800ft the first officer told the captain that he believed the aircraft was out of position.
The captain subsequently reassured him that they were on the glidepath. But the first officer noticed ground landmarks – including communication masts – which confirmed the aircraft was north of the centreline.
By this point the captain had halted the descent at 1,200ft, and was also looking for visual reference points, and the first officer instructed him to conduct a go-around. The A319 was 2.75nm from the threshold but still 1nm north of the centreline.
Flight-data recorder information showed that the aircraft was flying at 1,200ft for about 25s, during which the profile of the underlying terrain meant its radar altimeter height reduced from 950ft to a minimum point of 488ft as it crossed a 700ft ridgeline.
The UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch points out that the crew had originally briefed for an approach to runway 09, and that the captain had placed a 5nm range ring – centred on the 09 threshold – on his navigation display.
In its analysis of the 13 May 2015 incident, the AAIB says the captain “probably” did not change this display when accepting a late change to the opposite-direction runway 27 approach. His subsequent use of the display when manoeuvring might have resulted in his unintentionally positioning too close to the runway 27 threshold.
“Both crew members then lost situational awareness but neither communicated this to the other,” says the AAIB.
It states that the crew did not update their brief following the runway change, which meant the first officer was “not fully aware” of the captain’s plan for flying the visual approach and “not properly able” to monitor it.
The AAIB adds that the crew did not set the missed-approach altitude until after the go-around commenced, suggesting the landing checklist had not been satisfactorily completed.
EasyJet carried out its own investigation into the event and made three safety recommendations regarding its procedures, the AAIB says.

Why I choose career for Exporting the natural Stone !!!
Hi, guys, this is Miss Melanie Lin from Xiamen China. I started do the natural stone business from 2 year ago. I was the makeup exporter when i graduate from the college. As the makeup easy to broken on the shipping way that i lost much money in the makeup line. But in the makeup line i learned much the selling skills for exporting, and i know may friends form all over the word.
2 years ago, my dad suggest me to do the stone exporting. Actuary, we own family business in stone. My daddy, uncles, aunts are selling the Chinese Granite for China market. We own the a very big quarry and factory for yellow Color Granite which is Chinese Giallo Cecilia in Wuhan,China
.
At finally i follow my daddy suggestion, doing the exporting natural stone business in Xiamen, China. Xiamen is near by the Shuitou which is one of the biggest stone trading market in the world in the 21st century . There are many good advantage for doing the stone trading. ( I will write another one article for introducing the shuitou stone market, there are many amazing things.)
When i choose exporting natural stone business , there is a biggest problem for me. I need to learn the acknowledge of the stone: Material, Finish Way, Process Steps, Exporting Steps and so on. Only the material is the most difficult for me. Cause there are more than thousand of granite , marble, onyx. I need to learn Chinese granite, Chinese Marble, Italian Marble, Turkey Marble, India granite, Brazil granite, USA granite, Northern Europe granite. For Chinese natural stone, i need to familiar with each local stones. Like: China City Guangxi have the Chinese Nero Marquina Marble; Fujian have the G654, G687, G664, G684 granite and so on. I need know the good advantage and disadvantage for each material.
I used one year to learn then and the meantime i doing the business in the Turkey market , Slovakia market, Bangladesh Market ......I learn a few profit at the first year.
Anyway, Now love my stone career very much, and my dreams in 2016 is: Hope i will get a huge stone project in the Qatar Market!!!
